Transnational Knowledge Projects and Failing Racial Etiquette

Abstract: This essay calls upon Chicana/o Studies scholars to interrogate some of the assumptions underwriting the transnational turn. Chief among these is the implicit supposition that in order to produce transnational scholarship, one simply (but necessarily) must cross a national border. On the one hand, in taking the concept “transnational” far too literally, this simplistic assumption ignores far more substantive and compelling questions about transnational capitalism’s affects on subjectivity, desire, and resistance. On the other hand, the (sole) crossing-borders criterion suggests that those scholars who work on racial formations within the U.S. (Chicana/o Studies scholars, for instance) have no responsibility to think and work transnationally. Why should people, culture, racializations, literatures, produced within the U.S. not be studied within the larger context of transnational capitalism? Soto also critiques the fetishization of international difference and visibility politics. Queer theory, she argues, provides a helpful set of tools for negotiating these challenges of the transnational turn. Queer theory’s healthy poststructuralist skepticism of empiricism and positivism—together with its commitment to social justice and keen awareness of the power differentials within knowledge production—makes it poised to help us out of the temptation to simply shine a light on the global south

Solving a locational distribution problem of non-toxic solid waste on the island of Puerto Rico

The island of Puerto Rico is confronting a crisis in waste management due to inadequate management from the local government, the decreasing number of landfills available, high population density, and paucity of places for waste disposal. This research develops a least-cost model for the disposal and transportation of non-hazardous solid waste. Location-allocation (LA) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software are used to analyze the efficiency of the present pattern of waste allocation and to identify a near-to-optimal assignment of waste for the landfills in operation today and the landfills that will be open by 2008. The “near-to-optimal” models obtained from the LA analysis are compared to a regional system that has been proposed by the Autoridad de Desperdicios Sólidos (ADS) for the management of waste and with other waste-related infrastructure. The LA analysis revealed that the present allocation of waste is not efficiently distributed. The total cost of the present allocation of waste is 99,011.5 tons (miles) per day, while the least-cost model cost would be 83,201.5 (tons) miles per day. The least-cost model for 2008 allocated only seventy-two of the seventy-six municipios on the main island, leaving highly populated regions and 2,207.5 tons of waste generated per day out of the analysis. Most of the waste coming from the northeast would be transported to Humacao’s landfill (east). These results appear to be more economically efficient than other scenarios considered by the ADS. By 2008 most of the regions will be facing greater demands than landfill capacity. The scenario that presents the biggest savings is the LA model with twenty-seven landfills, while the model developed for 2008 provides better results than predicted by ADS, but the total distances values and cost are higher than the other scenarios evaluated. This suggests that more landfills might be needed by 2008 in order to save in operating costs. Based on these results recommendations are posed in relation to the location of waste-related infrastructure and possible regional make-ups, among others

Integration as a source of conflict. Clash between hegemony and cooperation

    Get PDF
Conflict as an expression of social relations has been approached by various authors, since it is an inherent phenomenon in the life of human beings. However, it is not enough to carry out a study of conceptualization, since relations among individuals are constantly evolving and are influenced by different economic, cultural, and technological contexts, among others. The process of globalization experienced since the end of the twentieth century has brought with it new sources of conflict, determined by aspects such as multiculturalism and the internationalization of politics, businesses, and information, in addition to generating the emergence of economic integration processes that demonstrate the existence of hegemonic relations among actors, with a dichotomy between conflict and cooperation

Hyperfine splittings of heavy quarkonium hybrids

In the framework of the Born-Oppenheimer Effective Field Theory, the hyperfine structure of heavy quarkonium hybrids at leading order in the 1/m Q expansion is determined by two potentials. We estimate those potentials by interpolating between the known short distance behavior and the long distance behavior calculated in the QCD Effective String Theory. The long distance behavior depends, at leading order, on two parameters which can be obtained from the long distance behavior of the heavy quarkonium potentials (up to sign ambiguities). The short distance behavior depends, at leading order, on two extra paramentes, which are obtained from a lattice calculation of the lower lying charmonium hybrid multiplets. This allows us to predict the hyperfine splitting both of bottomonium hybrids and of higher multiplets of charmonium hybrids. We carry out a careful error analysis and compare with other approaches.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 5 tables, matches journal versio

Fisheries-aquaculture sector in Mexico and Chile: comparative case study to reflect on their internalization

This study examines the existence of the paradigm of the human being as an egoistic individual, within the empirical plane. The possibility of variation of the degree of altruism in people’s behavior is explored according to their careers. For this analysis, we have applied experimental economics in students of the last year of their education, in Business Administration, Economics, Medicine and Sociology; all of them within a similar socioeconomic position. Other researchers have found evidence that the professional careers have, to a certain extent, some influence on the altruistic behavior. In this context, we have found that the economists would be the professional group that presents less altruistic behavior within our sample. On the other hand, by the elaboration of this study, we pretend to analyse if the gender differences are a determining factor in the degree of altruism; nevertheless, we did not find any important differences. In addition to this, our work also explores the possible influence of the geographic factor. For this, we used as a sample the department of Ica, where we made the necessary investigations for the case. On this, the individuals from this zone present a superior index of mutual cooperation, in comparison with the individuals from Lima.
